   Our School

Montessori School at Hampstead (MSH) is a private, non-profit school in Montgomery offering children in central Alabama an exceptional education based on proven Montessori principles.

MSH is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors and began operations in August 2011. MSH seeks to develop tomorrow’s leaders by encouraging critical thinking through an experiential curriculum with focuses on environmental stewardship and global studies.

It is our mission to provide a supportive classroom where students can develop a love of learning, high self-esteem, and a strong understanding of core skills that extends beyond rote learning. Our rigorous, integrated curriculum affords all students the opportunity to extend themselves when needed while also nurturing them through more challenging experiences. Students are encouraged to develop self-sufficiency and to spontaneously investigate, explore, and discover. Our approach is responsive to individual learning styles and fulfills our mission by allowing students to learn at their own, best pace under the guidance of excellent teachers in specially prepared, healthy, and sustainable surroundings.

MSH admits students of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. MSH does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

to Programs

   Programs

MSH provides Montessori education for children 12 months through 6 years of age. Our programs provide a strong core education in a vibrant community of students, teachers, administrators, and parents dedicated to the growth of each child. Learning is integrated across multiple areas of study, allowing for a deeper understanding of each subject.

MSH’s curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning and is further integrated with the natural environment through nature-based, environmental courses and a farm program operated in conjunction with The Hampstead Institute.

The Montessori classroom uses didactic materials that are self-correcting and allow students to learn at their own pace. Montessori teachers provide individual instruction within set guidelines. The materials help students see, touch, feel, and freely explore their environment and subjects without excessive teacher intervention. Montessori methods and materials promote an inner discipline and self-motivation.

to Montessori Method

    Montessori Method

The Montessori Method is the result of the experiences and discoveries of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952).

Maria Montessori observed that the child has an “absorbent mind,” especially between the ages of three and six. She believed children benefit from remaining within the same classroom for three years in order to fully develop the conscious awareness of their whole self. This allows older children to teach the younger children in the classroom, boosting their confidence and emotional well-being while reinforcing what they already know. Now, Montessori’s scientific observations of students are being verified by current brain research. The evidence-based, scientific Montessori Method is being recognized as cutting edge education.

Central to the Montessori Method, is the understanding that students learn best when instruction is tailored to meet their unique learning styles, interests, and abilities. MSH’s classrooms are filled with Montessori materials that can be presented to students individually or in small groups, allowing for individualized instruction. Our focus on the development of the whole child prepares our students to be successful in life and in their academic and professional careers.

MSH also strives to impart to each child a healthy respect for their peers. MSH students are taught to work peacefully together and to be helpful, courteous, and kind. This is further encouraged through the presentation of lessons in small group settings where students are encouraged to engage with each other and learn together.
